The CMA is saddened by news of the death of Comrades runner, John Masenyani Mabasa. John was a member of Giyani Gallopers Athletic Club and was the victim of a motor vehicle accident whilst running the Race The Comrades Legends. His wife Maria Mabasa who confirmed that John had already been laid to rest following a small funeral service in accordance with Covid-19 regulations. John was a teacher and he is survived by his wife Maria, a nurse, and seven children.


CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn said, “It is with the deepest sorrow that we convey our heartfelt condolences on the devastating and untimely passing of John Masenyani Mabasa, during the course of his participation in Race The Comrades Legends virtual event.”


Winn adds, “Our thoughts are with John’s fellow runners, friends, family and loved ones. It came with a sense of great shock and sadness for us to learn of the tragedy occurring, especially in the midst of an event in which runners throughout South Africa and the world were united in simply being outside individually and responsibly partaking in the freedom of an exercise they so love and enjoy in the midst of a pandemic.”
