Comrades Marathon runner Louis Massyn holds Permanent Number 403 and was inducted onto the Green Number Roll of Honour nearly 4 decades ago, after successfully completing 10 consecutive Comrades Marathons.

He has since completed 47 consecutive races, who together with Barry Holland, hold the highest number of Comrades Marathon finishes in the history of the great race, placing them in a league all of their own, and with only a total of 17 runners having been enlisted onto the Comrades Quadruple Green Number Roll of Honour.

Now 70 years of age, Louis ran his first Comrades in 1973 at the age of 22. Ever since, he has fostered a special relationship with the Comrades which has become an integral part of his life.

With Covid-19, the subsequent lockdown and resultant cancellation of races, Louis was one of the first athletes to enter last year’s inaugural virtual event, Race The Comrades Legends.

He again ensured the he would be part of the Comrades spirit, camaraderie and magic of race day, by being an early entrant in the Comrades Marathon Association’s second virtual event, the Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge, to be hosted on Sunday, 13 June 2021.

Louis says, “I entered the virtual race this year to be part of the camaraderie and Comrades Marathon Centenary festivities. With this being the second edition of the race to be cancelled, I must say that I am missing the real Comrades so much but at least I can still share in some of the Comrades spirit and be part of this amazing event.”

Louis adds, “Comrades is incredibly special to me, it has become a part of my life. To think that I am considered a Comrades legend is mind boggling. I get invited to participate in races worldwide, based on my history with this most phenomenal of races. My legacy with the Comrades Marathon has put me in a league of my own and I get goose bumps just thinking about it.”

“I like the theme which the CMA has chosen for this year’s race – Ithemba or Hope is… My hope is that we are going to get back to normal very soon. Our lives have been impacted by Covid-19 in such drastic ways. I hope as South Africans, that we continue to enjoy good health and make our dreams come true as a nation.”

“As an all-time Comrades lover, runner and supporter, my major hope is to achieve 50 successful Comrades Marathon finishes. In terms of my family, friends and running club members, my hope for them is definitely good health, vitality and safety.”

The Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge will comprise 5 distances, being a 5km, 10km, 21.1km, 45km and 90km which will all be run virtually on Sunday, 13 June 2021. For more information on the Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge and to enter, please click through HERE.

The campaign slogan for the Comrades Centenary Hope Challenge is ‘Ithemba – Hope Is’, which aims to contextualise each runner’s hopes, what the feeling means to them and to further inspire other athletes to dig deep and discover their own hopes and dreams for a better future and the new normal in a world ravaged by Covid-19.
