On Saturday, 8 January 2022, over 300 runners and walkers took part in a memorial run in honour of well-known Comrades runner and avid historian, Barry Varty (Comrades Race No. 616) who recently passed away aged 82.

At the request of Barry’s family, the 8.2km run was organised by Beloved Long Runs KZN founder, Dean Wight and hosted by Hillcrest Villagers Athletics Club of which Barry had been a member for the last few years of his life.

All participants were also asked to make a donation on the day to the family’s chosen charity, the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) whose team were present to support the runners on the day.

Fondly remembered for his iconic “Mkhulu 1939” shirts, the streets of Hillcrest were awash with yellow tees as close family, friends and fellow runners came out to pay their respects and honour Barry’s life during which he successfully completed no less than 28 Comrades Marathons, many of them in the yellow kit of Yellowwood Park Athletics Club, to which Barry belonged for over 40 years.

Amongst the many Comrades legends and greats taking part on the day was CMA Chairman, Mqondisi Ngcobo and the KZN runner with the highest number of Comrades medals, Barry Holland.

A special thank you to official Comrades sponsor, Thirsti for supplying all runners with some post-run hydration.

The run preceded a poignant and touching memorial service held inside the Hillcrest Villagers Clubhouse.
