Comrades Marathon marshals are a unique band of individuals who ensure the safe passage of runners at pivotal points along the 90km Comrades route.

Over the race’s long history, marshals have proven to be essential in the success of the ultramarathon, performing important duties that ultimately result in a safe event and an all-round help to Comrades athletes.

Marshals help in various ways:

  • By assisting with crowd control
  • Helping traffic authorities with traffic flow
  • Indicating direction to the athletes
  • Being a set of eyes on the road for runners requiring medical assistance

Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Race Director, Rowyn James says, “One of the most noble ways to get involved in the Comrades Marathon is by signing up to be a marshal. The CMA hosts a marshal information and training session where our marshals are briefed on the do’s and don’ts of marshalling. The Marshal portfolio remains vital to the smooth running of The Ultimate Human Race and offers an invaluable service to our event.”

James adds, “Our marshals perform their duties with pride and a deep sense of responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of Comrades Marathon runners along the 90km Comrades route. We are grateful to every marshal who freely give of their time and efforts.”
