The best on the national and international ultra-running circuit participated in the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ virtual race.


Among them were former Comrades Marathon winners and gold medallists, including the oldest surviving winner of the 1965 Comrades Marathon, Bernard Gomersall who is now 87 years old and took part in the 5km event in Washington DC, USA.



9-time Comrades Champ, Bruce Fordyce ran the 10km race while 1982 Women’s Winner and current CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn participated in the 5km event.


4-time Comrades Winner and Quadruple Green Number Legend, Alan Robb, 1991 Winner, Nick Bester and 2005 Champ, Sipho Ngomane, were also part of the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ as was former local champion, Shaun Meiklejohn and reigning 2019 Comrades Titleholders, Edward Mothibi and Gerda Steyn.


Other former Comrades champions Frances Van Blerk, Ludwick Mamabolo, Claude Moshiywa, Dmitri Grishine, Ellie Greenwood, Oleg Kharitonov, Tatyana Zirkhova and Leonid Shvetsov also joined the list of participants in the CMA’s inaugural virtual race.


Comrades gold medallists included Prodigal Khumalo, Trevor Parry, Fikile Mbuthuma, Sanet Beukes, Carla Molinaro, Melanie Van Rooyen, Mahlomola Sekhonyana, Colin Goosen and Lesley Austin.


South African running legend, Blanche Moila enjoyed her 45km run.
