RAF PROMOTES ROAD SAFETY TO DURBAN SCHOOLS AS PART OF 2025 COMRADES MARATHON
Road Safety tips and career guidance will be provided to needy schools as part of the Road Accident Fund’s (RAF) involvement in the 2025 Comrades Marathon. A motivational speaker will also be on hand to offer hope and encouragement for the underprivileged learners at Durban’s Amandlethu High School and Inanda Secondary School.
Road fatalities involving school-going children are excessive, with the five-year average for road fatalities involving those aged 5 to 19 in South Africa being 1 288. This is proof that road users are not doing enough to save young lives.
The high number of school children perishing due to reckless road behaviour is equivalent to approximately four (4) fatalities per day, and over 100 deaths each month. Over the period 2019 - 2023, 60% of the fatalities involved children who died in car crashes as pedestrians, while 36% were passengers, 2% cyclists, and 2% drivers. The alarming statistics must galvanise adults to take decisive action to prevent these deaths.
Participation in South Africa’s number one race offers the RAF with a perfect platform to interact with vulnerable road users such as students and runners. The Fund will also use the world-famous race to interact with a wide range of stakeholders about its products and services during the Comrades Marathon Expo at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 5 – 7 June.
