MY COMRADES STORY BY MAGDALENA MWETUVAYA NGHIIKI
“My name is Magdalena Mwetuvaya Nghiiki from Namibia.
My first Comrades Marathon in 2023 was a journey full of highs and lows. I started strong, but by the 50km mark, cramps set in. Looking at the time, I decided to walk to the finish, confident I could still make it in under 12 hours.
But at 60km, a friend caught up with me alongside the 10h30 bus, and that moment changed everything. Seeing a familiar face gave me a surge of motivation. We ran the last kilometres together, crossing the finish line in triumph. It was a reminder of how powerful companionship can be during such a gruelling race.
My return for my Back2Back Comrades Up Run in 2024 was a journey of pure resilience. I had an injury in April and a vertigo diagnosis that derailed my training. I had less than 900km in training with my longest run being 43km, and the fear of not being ready weighed heavily on me.
But I worked hard to rehabilitate my body through gym sessions, physiotherapy, and acupuncture. Against the odds, I completed the Up Run in 9:26, surpassing my expectations. Hills that once felt like obstacles became opportunities to showcase resilience.
Isaiah 40:31 kept me grounded: “They will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” This verse gave me the strength to persevere, knowing that with faith, anything is possible. I am forever grateful to Windhoek City Runners club members for their unwavering support before, during, and after race days. Their encouragement and belief in me made all the difference, helping me to push through every challenge.
One thing I have learned; We need each other, no matter our pace or running journey. Each of us contributes to the strength and spirit of the running community, reminding us that we are never alone on the road. Comrades is wonderful!”
